The Colostomy Association is the UK’s largest stoma charity providing support to over 21,000 people living with a stoma. Each year demand for our services continues to grow from our Facebook Support Group to our 24-hour helpline.
One of the longest-serving trustees is Monty Taylor who is the current Chairman of the Board. After 18 months of volunteering he was asked if he would like to become a trustee.
The role of the trustee is to help provide strategic oversight and guidance for the charity, giving the staff clear direction and focus for specific objectives. Trustees also approve or suggest new projects and help ensure the Colostomy Association stays on track to achieve its mission and vision.
The most difficult challenge that Monty has faced was overseeing the relocation of the Colostomy Association’s head offices on two occasions: “As the then British Colostomy Association we had occupied premises in Station Road in Reading which were heavily subsidised by McMillan but the lease was about to expire. We were then on our own as they also withdrew their funding and it was difficult to find somewhere suitable in Reading with enough office space and some parking that was also affordable.”
A new home was found for the newly formed Colostomy Association but as the charity continued to develop it soon outgrew its new premises in Reading and the search for another new home began again as the lease approached its expiry. Fortunately, Monty soon found suitable new offices with extra capacity for the charity’s future growth.
However, as Chairman of the Trustees, Monty finds the most enjoyable aspects of the role is when he is representing the CA at Open Days and national events across the country.
Speaking about one of his best experiences, Monty said: “I was once asked to talk about my experiences of travelling around the world and that having a stoma is not being a limiting factor. At breakfast the following morning I sat next to a lady who said to me “I have not dared to go on holiday since my operation three years ago but after hearing your talk last night we are going back home today and will book a holiday!””
The Colostomy Association’s Trustees have a huge responsibility and, as volunteers, they dedicate immense amounts of their own time to help ensure we are able to pursue our mission of a world where having a stoma is no barrier to living a full and active life.
