The Colostomy Association prides itself on providing almost all of our services for no charge. Our helpline, Facebook support group, range of literature and Tidings magazine are all completely free to access.
As an independently funded charity, a significant amount of our income comes from donations, advertising in Tidings magazine and the work of fundraisers.
Fundraising volunteers perform a huge amount of work to ensure vital CA services continue to run without any cost to our supporters. Whether they are running a marathon, holding a cake sale, dyeing their hair or climbing a mountain – fundraisers go to extremes to help support the Colostomy Association.
Caroline Emeny has been holding an annual bake sale and music quiz in her home village in Suffolk since 2011. In total, she has so far managed to raise around £6,000 for the Colostomy Association through her work as a fundraiser.
The bake sale involves around 40 different bakers who make mince pies, tray bakes, sausage rolls, Christmas cakes and much more. The weeks leading up to the sale involve Caroline asking people to bake, co-ordinating when they will drop off their food, advertising in the local press as well as putting up posters locally.
The music quiz involves a small team of Caroline, her husband and two close friends who try to balance questions so that they are neither too difficult nor too easy for most of the contestants.
For Caroline, the biggest challenge is keeping things fresh each year: “We want to keep them both interesting and a ‘must’ on people’s calendars. This means bringing new baked goodies into the November event, and ensuring we change the categories and running order in the music quiz.”
Running a fundraising event can take months of work from planning and organising to publicity and getting people to make a donation. However, the effort is worth the reward – Caroline says she feels “sheer joy when counting the money at the end and realising just how generous people have been in donations, buying raffle tickets and spending their hard earned money. We appreciate every penny raised.
“The delight in running out of cakes after 90 minutes and raising hundreds of pounds in that incredibly small window of time is amazing.”
Due to all her hard work, Caroline has so far managed to raise around £6,000 for the Colostomy Association. This money will help ensure that vital CA services such as our helpline, quarterly magazine and range of literature remain free for anyone who requests them.
