Gas collects inside the bag causing it to inflate. One of the reasons this happens is because the filter, which normally allows any gas expelled through the stoma to escape, has become blocked or obstructed.
The following may help :
- Not covering the filter
- While showering, bathing or swimming covering the filter with a sticky patch to ensure it doesn't get wet and become ineffective.
- Checking to make sure that the contents of the bag have not come into contact with the filter thus impairing its function.
- Trying a different appliance. It may have a more effective filter.
- Cutting down on high fibre foods and beans, peas and onions which contain a type of sugar and starch that can escape digestion and enter the colon where they are fermented to produce gas.
