Stoma Aid helps ostomates in Syria

May 10, 2017

The Colostomy Association is pleased to announce that its Stoma Aid project is now working with Hand in Hand for Syria.

Thousands of people living with a stoma across the world are unable to access basic stoma supplies. In some cases people use improvised objects such as tin cans, plastic bags, crisp packets and bits of cloth. The Colostomy Association’s Stoma Aid project has been running since January 2016 and collates unused stoma supplies from the UK that are donated by people who no longer need them. This can be for a number of reasons including reversal surgery or a change of product. The supplies are then distributed to patients living with a stoma in developing countries that cannot afford or access supplies.

The first Stoma Aid shipment to Hand in Hand for Syria was sent in April. This comprised 60 cartons, containing a total of 25,000 stoma bags cut to fit a variety of stoma sizes, along with sprays, wipes, creams, wound dressings and bandages, underwear and urostomy night and leg bags.   These supplies have now been received and are being distributed to ostomates via the hospitals that the charity runs and a further 80 cartons will be sent at the end of May.

Hand in Hand for Syria is a UK registered charity that delivers humanitarian aid to Syria on behalf of international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and governments who do not have access to the country. They have over 300 staff on the ground, working in some of the country’s hardest hit and most difficult to reach areas. Over the past six years they have established 8 hospitals in Syria as well as supporting more than 20 clinics and other medical facilities, which they supply with medicines and medical consumables donated in the UK. In 2015, this led to 144,467 patients receiving much needed treatment.

Anyone wishing to donate unused* supplies to Stoma Aid can contact the Colostomy Association on 0800 328 4257 for further information.

*The Colostomy Association does not advocate the over-ordering or over-stocking of supplies with the idea of sending the surplus to Stoma Aid and cannot accept donations on this basis.
